In spite of its monumentality, the architecture of Legorreta + Legorreta is conceived for us to live in: it suits our needs, our appetites, and our emotions. Some of the best examples are seen in the vestibules of the Center of Visual Arts and of the Sheraton Hotel in Bilbao. Geometric pure and timeless forms instill rotundity and clarity into the complicated projects. Even in large complexes, like the Chiron Laboratories, or the Egade Graduate School, privacy and simplicity is preserved. The treatment of light also aids them in creating different spaces without any need of walls or separators. The application of color is a most important priority, especially in projects set in their native Mexico. There are tones that the architects use to dramatize spaces which intensify the personal experience of the people in the buildings. All of these ingredients integrate architecture, landscaping, and interior decoration into a single discipline that respects the place and the traditions.
While the computer has made sweeping transparent planes and polished metal details comonplace, at least in renderings, few architects are actually building these images, and none with the craft and imagination of Smith-Miller + Hawkinson. This New York-based practice has recently vaulted into international prominence with the completion of their Glass Museum in Corning, New York. Built entirely of glass walls held in place by marine-quality fittings, this building has stunned the world with its sensuous qualities of transparency, reflection, and retraction.Between Spaces is a collaboration between the architects and the world-famous photographer Judith Turner, whose seminal book Judith Turner Photographs Five Architects established a new way of looking at architectural photography upon its publication two decades ago. Her dramatic duotone photographs illustrate the details, complexity, and qualities of light and space found inn Smith-Miller + Hawkinson's architecture. This new monograph features in-depth examinations of five recently constructed projects--Corning Glass Center, Loft for Robert Greenburg, InsideOut/Fabrications, North Carolina Musuem of Art Amphitheater & Outdoor Cinema, and Pier 11--and two unbuilt projects--Ferry Terminal Guidlines and Shilla-Daechi Bulding. This beautiful volume is lavishly illustrated with plans, models, and stunning tour-de-force photography.
Like his fellow Pop painters Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Mel Ramos (born 1935) derives the motifs for his work from mass media and advertising. In bold and immediately recognizable canvases, he unites consumer goods with idealized pin-up girls modeled after magazine images dating from the 1950s and 1960s. Ramos immortalizes these models' lascivious poses by entwining them with the featured products in what he calls "commercial pin-ups." This monograph illustrates and discusses many of these works, but
This major new museum was opened in September 1999, displaying for the first time to the public a significant proportion of the Chinese Imperial Collection at Nanjing. Featuring bronze, gold, jade, pottery, porcelain, lacquer, scholars' objects, painting and embroidery, this book reflects the amazing glories of this extraordinary collection. An active programme of archaeological excavation has immensely added to the wealth of the collection's earliest artifacts, such as the thirty-eight gold articles discovered in 1982 in a cellar at the Nanyaozhuang village, Jiangsu Province - a veritable hoard from the Warring States period. One hundred and seven of the finest pieces in the collection have been selected by Professor Xu Huping, with a brief description and historical assessment of each item. The selection provides an introduction to the greatest art of China, as well as an informative and fascinating commentary on one of China's greatest national collections
Covering three centuries, this vibrant, fresh overview ranges from Puritan portraits to the American Impressionists to the videos and digital works of today's most intriguing conceptual artists. 500 color illustrations.
"The Collections of the Romanovs celebrates the 300th anniversary of the founding of St Petersburg by exploring the role of the Romanov dynasty as collectors of fine and decorative arts. The book features the great masterworks of western European art collected and prized by Romanov tsars, from Peter the Great (ruled 1721-25) to Nicholas II (ruled 1874-1918). Included are masterpieces of painting, drawing, printmaking, porcelain, silver and textile--over 100 works in all, drawn exclusively from the extraordinary collection of the State Hermitage museum in St Petersburg. The works are presented chronologically, allowing the reader to understand the role of successive Russian rulers, the evolution of taste, and changing values as applied to Western art practice. The interaction between East and West--including Russian cultural consumption of western European tastes--emerges as a major theme. The book also advances our knowledge of taste and patronage in Russia. Sumptuously illustrated, this book is required reading for anyone interested in Russia's imperial past.
